| There are few who can claim
to truly live the life they portray in their public persona, particularly in
the Black Metal circles. An extensive list of pretenders and charlatans all vy
for the accolade of most evil, most brutal or most Satanic. What makes those
who truly believe so freighting and compelling is that they make no effort,
they simply are what they preach; and so it is with Gorgoroth. Lead by the
ghoulish Gaahl, infamous not only for is sinister vocal's but also his off
stage antics. Antics that have made the name of Gorgoroth synonymous with the
darker side of music. Gorgoroth have by and large remained true to their underground roots, choosing to leave commercial acclaim to others. The release of 'Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam' shows no signs of bowing to popular trends either, this is Black Metal at it rawest, most venomous (no pun intended). Recorded as a full time three piece, the album benefits from the guest drumming of Satyricon / 1349's Frost, and what a mighty addition to an already impressive trio he makes. An uncompromising non-secular, Satanic soaked album would be the least we would expect from these disciples of Hades, and 'Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam' does not disappoint. Many saw 'Twilight Of The Idols' as possibly the pinnacle of Gorgoroth's career, an album almost impossible to follow. Rather, however than try to better their previous work, Gorgoroth instead chose to use 'Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam' as a continuation of their evil message. In Gaahl Gorgoroth have one of the most recognisable and unique vocalists in the genre. His ability to switch between death screams to spoken word, while still keeping the full on intensity the music deserves should astound even the more experienced of Black Metal fans. The diluted message of Satanism through legends and myths is left to others, Gorgoroth make no secret of their beliefs and aren't afraid to use their music as a vehicle to promote their gospel. 'Ad Majorem Sathanas Gloriam' is as much chilling as it is brutal, and it this that differentiates Gorgoroth's from the pack, and not simply imitators to the dark throne. |
