Like so many of the finer things in life, it takes time to truly appreciate them. Music like food, we all to often we crave a quick fix of disposable throw away fodder, no sooner finished than it is forgotten. There are however no such sugar coated senseless treats here. Jucifer's latest offering, "If Thine Enemy Hunger", is a slow burner extraordinaire and one for the connoisseur. Certainly not for those with a penchant for brain dead drudgery of Nu Metal, as this thought provoking slab from Athens, Georgia's finest is truly a vintage to be savoured. Jucifer are by no means new kids on the block, having peddled their own brand of sonic mayhem in the wilds of middle America since their inception in 1992. This two piece don't suffer from a lack volume either as Amber Valentine, vocalist and guitarist, with the aid of her massive wall of amps produce noise levels of monstrous proportions. Don't however mistake Jucifer for anything like White Stripes clones, as the number of band members in both bands is the only similarity. More akin to the Melvins meeting Black Sabbath would be a fairer representation of what "If Thine Enemy Hunger" has to offer. Vocally "If Thine Enemy Hunger" alternates between sweet soulful tones to downright ear piercing whales, all ably supported by Edger Livengood's bombastic drum beats. With the likes of "Lucky Ones Burn" and the first single from the album "Pontius Of Palia", Jucifer produce foot stompin', head banging metal of such groove laden proportions it's staggering. It may therefore come as somewhat of a surprise the delicacy of such songs as "Medicated", and the ease in which they are intricately woven into the fabric of the album to produce an ebb and flow as beautiful as any country stream or summer breeze. While almost a certainty to be overlooked by many, for the few who discover this rare nugget of metal mastery will find delights only comparable to those found in a certain box once owned by a lady named Pandora. |
