| We have seen the second term
of Bill Clinton and the first from George W for that matter, come and go. We
heralded in a new millennium and Phileas Fogg could have circumnavigated the
globe forty one times, in the same amount of time it has taken Sadus to
release the follow up to 1997's "Elements Of Anger". Nine years is a s long
hiatus by anyone's standard, would "Out For Blood" be worth the wait however? Celebrating their 20th anniversary, Sadus heralded from a time when the likes of Metallica, Exodus, Testament were all cutting their teeth in the California emerging Thrash scene. Never prolific, the past 20 years have only bore witness to 6 albums, one of which a best of offering. Sadus's influence, while still relatively underground is without doubt thanks largely due to their 1988 "Illusions" and 1990 "Swallowed In Black" offerings. Their apparent effortless blend of technical Thrash / Death metal fusion while done ad nauseam in 2006, Sadus can truly claim to be kings of this genre since the mid eighties. The worry for any band with a reputation and a place in any genres history, is that any new material is nothing more than repackaged nostalgia. This is however not the case here, "Out For Blood" is pure Sadus. True Sadus have not taken any giant steps in experimentation but rather developed their trade mark sound and taken it into 2006. From the outset "In The Name Of...." leaves you in no doubt the technical savagery that is to ensue. Darren Travis's vocals have lost none of their shrill ferocity, nor has his riffing diminished with time, and in Steve DiGiorgio Sadus have a musician capable of such exquisite brilliance words fail to describe. Thrash has long since had it's day in the sun, but for those who saw the Thrash juggernaut first hand back in the day, this album is a wonderful reminder of what made the late early nineties so special. "Out For Blood" takes all that was so influential from the Sadus back catalogue and shreds new live into what was old school, making it new. If you listen carefully the sound of a second coming can be heard, backend in by the genres godfathers, of which Sadus are worthy candidate for the throne. |
