Sweden's own soulful rockers shoot from the hip with our very own Jules about the bands latest release "The Newborn Sun" and their plans for the future.

Hey Martin, how are things with Sideburn?

We are doin’ fine! We are at the moment preparing for the release party for our new album “The Newborn Sun” which will take place the 6th of April here in Stockholm. We are also rehearsing a couple of new songs for the gig.

For those people who have not yet come across Sideburn, how would you describe the band and your sound to them?

We are a four piece band with a classic line-up of guitar, bass, drums, organ and vocals and play classic heavy rock inspired by the seventies hard rock and progressive scene but with an updated sound.

The band has had a number of personnel changes over the course of the bands existence. How does this current incarnation of Sideburn rate to those in the past? What and who brings what to the band?

This current line-up has existed since 2003, we think we have developed as musicians, composers and over the years we have become a stronger unit.

What influences do you all bring to the Sideburn?

We all bring a lot of different influences to the band musically, we are listening to everything from Death metal to folk-music but we share a common foundation and musical vision.

Sideburn have spent over a decade making a name for yourselves. When you began the band did you ever anticipate that you’d still be doing this a 10 years on?

Of course, from the start we felt that we had something special together, just like a good relationship you want it to last forever.

The band took the unconventional route of recording “The Newborn Sun”, and then shopping for a label. This must have been financially a huge commitment for the band and a big risk. Why do it this way?

Because then we could have total control over the production and do things our own way. We also had good help and support from our Management company (Ulf Wahlberg at XTC-Productions) who also recorded and co-produced the album at XTC Studio in Stockholm.

How pleased were you with the end result of “The Newborn Sun”? Is there a sense of relief to finally have the record out there?

We are really satisfied with the end results. It’s been a lot of hard work behind the album so to finally have it in our hands…well, you can imagine.

What is the significance of the title?

This record marks a new era for the band and the title reflects on the feeling of being resurrected.

The album was finally released via Buzzville Records in March 2007. How did the deal with Buzzville come about, and how’ve they been treating you guys?

We had a couple of labels that showed interest and after some negotiations we felt that Buzzville was the right label for us.

What has been the feed back to the album thus far?

Great so far, we have got a lot of airplay on the Swedish national radio and done a couple of interviews. The reviews so far have been really great, and our myspace site is very well visited.

What plans have you to tour in support of the album?

We are at the moment in contact with several booking agencies all over the world, so keep updated on our myspace site: www.myspace.com/sideburnsweden for upcoming gigs and the latest news.

How did you approach the writing of “The Newborn Sun”? Are all the songs brand new or how some been around for a while?

We begun the recording of the album the summer of 2005 so they been around now for a while.

Sweden is more famed for its Death metal than it is its bluesy hard rock; however the likes of Grand Magus and yourselves appear hell bent on changing people’s perceptions. What is the state of the domestic Swedish scene?

Sweden has a vital musical scene in all genres of music. And the Swedish Hardrock/metal acts are making a great impact all over the world.
So what is next up for the band?
We are currently preparing for all the upcoming gigs and also writing new material for the next album.
Any final words for all the fans of Sideburn out there?

Well Jules, We hope that the fans will enjoy the album as much as we did when we made it. And we also hope to see ya all somewhere along the road. Long live rock´n roll!
