Holy hell if ever there was someone who had the weight of expectation upon their shoulders it was Tom G. Warrior. I mean the name Celtic Frost alone is held in such reverence that just to utter the name sends most metal fans into anaphylactic shock. Given the success of Celtic Frost’s 2006 come back album, “Monotheist”, Messer Fischer really did have is work cut out when it came time to re-entering the ring with his new project Triptykon. Let’s be fair here though “Eparistera Daimones” could and should have been the follow up to “Monotheist” such are the similarities to said albums material. Even with a totally new line-up the sound and style is unmistakably Frost(esque), from the dark tense atmosphere to the huge textured guitars, and of course Tom G. Warriror’s vocals are nothing less than the stuff of metal legend! “Eparistera Daimones” embraces all that was so potent and defining about Celtic Frost, unashamedly revelling in it the darkness bourn of Fischer’s introspective mind rambles. Yet while so much is intrinsically linked to Celtic Frost there is evidence that the creative shackles were removed and we are witness to a level of experimentation not seen on any previous Celtic Frost offering. As is the case with the majority of Warrior’s material one has to look at the whole rather than parts in order to make sense of much of the music. “Eparistera Daimones” will spawn no hit singles nor will it be an instant hit with many but given time the likes of “Goetia”, and eleven minute mini-epic takes you to levels of melancholy you thought unimaginable. While there is little doubt the Metal world moans the loss of Celtic Frost, Tom G. Warrior has returned with an album, if not in name, will continue the Celtic Frost legacy. |
